Golden Rock (Kyaikhtiyo): Originally it was called Kyaik-i-thi-yo in Mon language. It means the pagoda carried by a hermit’s head. With the passage of time, it came to be known as Kyaikhtiyo. It’s located on the edge of the Paunglaung Mountain range, part of the eastern Yoma in Kyaikhto township in Mon State 3600 ft (1090m) above the sea level. The incredible 'GOLDEN ROCK' precariously perched on the edge of the hill and is a place of important pilgrimage for Buddhists. An excursion to the Golden Rock, drive through seemingly endless paddy fields to the small town of Kyaikto. Arrival to the 'base camp' of KINPUN, take a local truck up a bumpy track about half way up the mountain. The climb offers magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and the opportunity to make friends with the many local people who make the pilgrimage to KYAIKTIYO. Weather permitting, sunset views from Mount Kyaiktiyo are amazing.
