Mawlamyine – known as Moulmein under the Bristish rule – is the third largest city and second largest port in Myanmar. It was only a small village when the southernmost part of Myanmar including it had to be ceded to the British at the end of the First Anglo-Myanmar War in 1826. It lies at the confluence of four rivers! The city is lush and green with trees as it lies in Lower Myanmar which receives heavy rainfall. Its Strand Road is very beautiful and a stroll along it in the morning or evening is a very pleasant experience. According to a Myanmar saying, Yangon is well-known for showing off, Mandalay for eloquence and Mawlamyine for good eating!
